Referral traffic analytics

See which outside sources send traffic, and what happens next.

Vicin turns Google Analytics 4 traffic records into a focused view of the outside sources sending visits to one selected business in one selected date range. Compare volume, engagement, key events, movement, and destination pages before deciding which source needs attention.

Product views use fictional demo data.

Why it matters

Why referral volume alone can mislead

The source sending the most traffic is not always the source sending the best visits. A high-volume source can send short visits with few key events, while a smaller source can bring people who stay longer, engage more, and reach pages that matter to the business.

Vicin keeps traffic volume beside engagement, key events, period movement, and landing-page evidence. The result is a source-by-source view of both reach and visit quality, without turning one metric into a verdict.

The evidence

What Referrals measures

The view keeps the headline totals, source detail, trend, traffic share, and destination evidence for the selected period in one place.

Reach

Third-Party Sessions and Sources

Count the measured sessions from eligible outside sources and the number of distinct source and medium pairs behind them.

Outcome signals

Key Events

See the key events recorded in Google Analytics 4 for referral visits. Vicin preserves the measurement as configured in Analytics rather than renaming it as a sale or customer.

Concentration

Top Source Share

See how much of measured third-party traffic came from the leading source. A high Top Source Share signals concentration, so one outside source accounts for more of the measured sessions and deserves closer monitoring. Concentration is evidence to review, not a verdict.

Identity

Source, Medium, and Users

Keep the reported source and raw medium visible beside sessions and users, so different kinds of outside traffic are not flattened into one anonymous referral total.

Visit quality

Average session duration and engagement rate

Compare how long visits lasted and the share Analytics counted as engaged for each displayed source and medium.

Change

Previous-period movement

Compare current sessions with the equal prior period when that read is available. A source without a usable prior basis is not given a fabricated percentage change.

Context

Engagement vs. Baseline

Compare each qualifying source with the session-weighted engagement rate across the full measured third-party set.

Destination

Landing page and referring URL

Follow referral sessions to the page they entered and the referring URL Analytics reported, then compare sessions, duration, engagement rate, and key events for that pair.

Time

Daily or monthly source movement

Review how the leading sources changed across the selected range. Short ranges use daily points and longer ranges use monthly points, with remaining measured traffic grouped as Other.

From source to decision

How to use Referrals

Start with the outside sources behind the traffic. Then test whether the visits were useful before choosing what deserves attention.

  1. Step 1

    Find the sources

Select the business and date range, then review Third-Party Sessions, Sources, Key Events, Top Source Share, and the ranked source table.

  2. Step 2

    Compare reach with engagement

Read sessions beside users, average duration, engagement rate, key events, and the referral baseline. A large source is not automatically a strong source.

  3. Step 3

    Inspect the destination

Open the landing-page and referrer detail to see where visitors arrived and whether the destination record helps explain the source-level result.

  4. Step 4

    Choose the next check

Protect a productive listing or relationship, investigate a material change, review a weak destination page, or document the evidence for a client or team.

Interpretation

Insights you get

Vicin separates traffic size from engagement quality and shows the calculation basis beside the result.

Overall referral engagement

See the session-weighted engagement rate across the full measured third-party set, including measured sources beyond the shorter display table.

Highest qualifying engagement

Identify the qualifying source and medium with the highest engagement rate, with its sessions and difference from the referral baseline shown beside it.

Lowest qualifying engagement

Identify the qualifying source and medium with the lowest engagement rate without presenting a thin, low-volume row as a reliable extreme.

Source performance in context

Read each qualifying source against the same baseline instead of comparing isolated percentages with no shared reference point.

Traffic share and movement

See whether traffic is concentrated, which leading sources changed through the period, and which sources have current sessions but no usable prior-session basis. Review those sources for new activity without presenting the missing comparison as a percentage gain.

Destination evidence

Follow each visit to its landing page

Source-level totals tell you who sent the visit. Landing-page and referrer detail shows where that visit entered the site.

Vicin pairs the reported landing page with the referring URL and keeps sessions, average duration, engagement rate, and key events on the same row. That helps you investigate whether the result appears more closely associated with the source or the destination page.

The view reports the highest-volume landing-page and referrer pairs from the measured pool. A missing referrer remains unattributed rather than being assigned to a source that Analytics did not report.

Practical use

What you can do with the evidence

Referral evidence supports a focused next check. It does not replace business judgment or claim that traffic alone caused revenue.

Protect

Keep productive listings visible

Document sources that repeatedly send engaged visits or key events, then confirm the listing, directory profile, or relationship is still accurate and active.

Investigate

Review material source changes

Use the equal prior period and the source trend to find a real shift, then check the outside listing or campaign context before drawing a conclusion.

Improve

Check the destination page

Review the landing page, message match, page experience, and Analytics setup when a source sends visits with weak engagement. The evidence may point to the destination rather than the source.

Compare

Separate source and medium

Use the raw medium to distinguish different traffic records from the same source, including paid and unpaid patterns when Analytics reports them separately.

Report

Show the evidence behind the conclusion

Use the headline totals, source table, baseline comparison, trend, and landing-page detail to explain what changed. Then open Performance to place referral traffic beside organic search, paid, direct, and website behavior. For local SEO and wider marketing review, compare this evidence with Google Search queries without treating search traffic as referral traffic.

Performance

Research

Review link and citation evidence separately

Traffic behavior and backlink research answer different questions. Use Links & Citations when the task is to inspect discovered linking pages and citation evidence rather than measured site visits.

Why Vicin

Why Vicin handles referral evidence differently

The Referrals view is built around the traffic record a local business needs to evaluate, not a narrow label or a single top-line number.

A broader third-party view
Vicin classifies eligible outside sources from the Google Analytics 4 source and medium record. The headline is broader than rows marked only with the strict referral medium.
Known non-referral traffic excluded
Search engines, direct and unattributed traffic, the business's own paid-search sources, self-referrals, and known ad-serving infrastructure are excluded from the third-party set.
Raw medium preserved
The original medium stays visible so the user can tell how Analytics classified the visit instead of losing useful context inside a renamed bucket.
Full totals, focused tables
Headline totals and the engagement baseline use the full measured third-party set within the product's bounded read. The page then shows the leading rows and states display limits when they are reached.
Missing is not zero
Vicin distinguishes a measured empty result from a failed read, a partial read, a missing prior period, and unavailable landing-page detail. It does not turn an unavailable source into a performance score.

Built for the people reviewing the result

Who Referrals is for

The same evidence can support an owner checking a few listings or a marketer explaining referral performance for one selected location.

Small businesses

See which outside listings and sites sent measurable visits, how those visitors engaged, and which destination pages they reached.

Multi-location businesses

Select each business or location separately and review its referral evidence for the chosen period without blending locations into one unsupported comparison.

Marketing agencies

Trace a referral conclusion back to source, medium, period movement, engagement, key events, and landing-page records before reporting it.

Freelance marketers

Use a consistent evidence path to review outside traffic, investigate a change, and explain the limits of what Analytics can attribute.

Measurement boundaries

What the measurement proves

Referrals describes observed Google Analytics 4 traffic and engagement. It does not claim more than the connected measurement can support.

Analytics is the source

Sessions, users, engagement rate, average session duration, key events, source, medium, landing page, and referrer come from the connected Google Analytics 4 property for the selected business and period.

Key events keep their meaning

A key event is whatever the connected Analytics property has configured as a key event. It is not automatically revenue, a customer, a booked job, or proof that the referring source caused the outcome.

Attribution has limits

Browsers, redirects, consent choices, tagging, and missing referrer information can affect attribution. Vicin reports the record Analytics returned and does not guess a source for an unattributed visit.

Small movements need care

Low-volume sources can move sharply from only a few sessions. Vicin limits highest and lowest engagement interpretation to qualifying sources and withholds comparisons when the basis is not available.

Questions

Referral traffic questions

Definitions, limits, and the decisions the Referrals view can support.

What counts as third-party traffic in Vicin?

Vicin starts with the Google Analytics 4 source and medium record, then keeps eligible outside sources while excluding search engines, direct and unattributed traffic, self-referrals, the business's own paid-search sources, and known ad-serving infrastructure.

Why show both source and medium?

Source identifies where Analytics says the traffic came from. Medium records how the visit was classified. Keeping both visible helps distinguish different traffic records from the same outside source.

Do the displayed rows always add up to the headline total?

Not always. The headline totals use the full measured third-party set within the bounded read, while the source table, trend, traffic-share view, and landing-page table show focused leading rows. Vicin states a limit when a bounded read or display cap is reached.

How are the highest and lowest engagement sources chosen?

The interpretation uses source and medium rows with more than two sessions and at least the average session count across the full measured set. If the data does not support distinct qualifying extremes, Vicin does not manufacture a pair.

What happens when a source has no usable prior period?

Vicin shows the current measurement and leaves the change comparison unavailable. It does not create a percentage increase from a zero or missing comparison basis.

Can I compare referrals across all locations at once?

Referrals evaluates one selected business or location and one selected date range at a time. A multi-location team can select each location and review its evidence, but this view does not create a referral league table across the portfolio.

Does referral traffic prove revenue or causation?

No. It shows measured visits, engagement, key events, movement, and destinations from Analytics. Revenue, customer status, and exclusive causation require evidence that this view does not claim.

Can paid traffic appear in Referrals?

Yes. An eligible outside source can retain a paid medium when Google Analytics 4 reports it. Vicin keeps the raw medium visible instead of treating every third-party visit as unpaid referral traffic.

What does Key Events mean?

Key Events are the actions configured as key events in the connected Google Analytics 4 property. Vicin preserves that definition instead of assuming a key event represents a sale, lead, customer, or booked job.

Can I see where referral visitors landed?

Yes. The landing-page and referrer view pairs the reported destination page with the referring URL. It shows measured sessions, average duration, engagement rate, and key events for the displayed pairs.

Can I compare referral performance between periods?

Yes, when Vicin has a usable equal prior period. It shows current and prior-period movement without creating a percentage change when the comparison basis does not exist.
